HISTORY OF HORNS-A-PLENTY
& D BAR X
Pat Fillman began making antler art in 1993 when
he and his wife Kristi lived in Ely, Nevada. At that time, Pat had a whole pile
of antlers in the garage that he and his friends had gathered in the mountains
near town. He saw an antler chandelier made by another artist when he went to a
convention in Las Vegas and decided to try to make his own.
It wasn't as easy as he thought, however. It took
more than a year to come up with designs that were strong, symmetrical, and
beautiful and to find suppliers for specialized lighting parts. Meanwhile, they
moved to Phoenix and continued to work full-time at other jobs while Pat made
and sold antler art after work and on the weekends.
Eventually, the business had grown so much that
Pat couldn't keep up with both jobs any more and in March 1995 he decided to go
into antler art full-time. The business expanded even more quickly after that,
and soon Kristi left her career and assumed the role of office manager. Pat's
work was featured in the Arizona Republic in March 1998 and ABC News 15 in
Phoenix also did a short news program about his work in July 1998. Since then
numerous other magazines have highlighted Pat's products including Log Home
Design Ideas, Log Home Living, Estates West, and Nevada Magazine.
In July 1998, after five years in the Phoenix
area, the Fillmans moved the business back to their hometown of Ely, Nevada
which is located in the high mountains of east central Nevada. They now live and
work at the historic D Bar X Ranch 45 miles east of Ely which is about 5 hours north of
Las Vegas, 6 hours east of Reno, 3 hours south of Elko, and 4 hours west of Salt
Lake.
The Fillmans run ads in regional and national
magazines, and they display their work at shows throughout the West. They've
shipped antler art to customers across the country, to Canada, Spain, England
and they've even heard of them going as far away as Japan! The largest
chandelier Pat ever made was a 9-foot tall chandelier that went in a home in
Durango, Colorado. It had to be assembled on-site because it was too large to be
shipped by freight truck!
In 1998, Pat Fillman, owner of
Horns-A-Plenty Antler Art began creating new product lines and marketing them
under the name D Bar X Lighting & Home Accessories. Items handcrafted by Pat
include wagon wheel chandeliers, lantern wall sconces, and mica shades. He also
offers rawhide shades and chandelier hoists.
In 2005 the Fillman's
were happy to donate a wagon wheel chandelier for the Barrett
Home Makeover (Episode #303) of ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home
Edition." The Fillman's are also proud to support the wildlife
conservation efforts of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation,
Safari Club International, the Federation for North American
Wild Sheep, the National Wild Turkey Federation, and the Mule
Deer Foundation. They also support the local 4-H Clubs and the
National Rifle Association.
All antlered animals shed their antlers naturally
each year and grow a new set by the next mating season. This includes deer, elk,
moose, and caribou.
Thus, antlers are a natural, renewable,
recyclable resource that has been used by people for centuries to make tools,
jewelry, buttons, and now lighting, furniture, and other home accessories.
People who live in areas where there are large
populations of antlered animals gather the sheds every year and sell them to
traveling antler buyers. Though we do go out in the hills and do some of our own
"horn hunting," we can’t find enough to keep up with demand, so we
buy most of our antlers from other shed hunters or from antler buyers.
Antlers are bought and sold by the pound and by
the grade. Grade refers to the age of the antler (which is the amount of time it
was lying on the ground after being shed). Antlers are classified as Grade 1, 2,
or 3.
Grade 1 antlers are the ones most recently shed.
They still have a hard, shiny surface with no surface cracking. Grade 2 antlers
are a little older and have developed some surface cracks on the side that was
exposed to the sun. Grade 3 antlers are the oldest with surface cracking on both
sides of the antler.
We offer the same beautiful, strong, and
symmetrical designs in the Grade 3 antlers as we offer in Grades 1 and 2. We DO
NOT use really old antlers that may be cracked all the way through, so our Grade
3 designs are every bit as strong as our Grade 1 and 2 designs. We don’t use
any antlers with broken tips or rodent holes.
It is important to note that some antler art
companies use only Grade 3 antlers.
Antler Pricing — At
Horns-A-Plenty we think it is only fair to base your price on what the antlers
actually cost us.
Grade 1 antlers are more difficult to find than
grades 2 or 3, therefore, they are the most expensive antler to buy. Grade 2
antlers are more plentiful and easier to find, so their price is lower. Grade 3
antlers are even more abundant, so they are the least expensive.
Prices listed in the catalog are for Grade
2 antlers as we have found that we can create very high-quality antler art with
these antlers at a more reasonable price. Grade 1 antlers are an additional 50
percent on any design. Grade 3 antlers are available on any design using mule
deer antlers and are 20 percent less.
Antler Color — At Horns-A-Plenty,
we use a special antler stain on all designs to re-create the "natural
brown" look of pre-shed antlers. (We can also leave the antlers natural
bleached white upon request.) The stain creates fairly even coloration depending
on how each antler takes the stain, but most often we strive to re-create the
"natural brown" look as closely as possible. Often, even experienced
antler people can’t tell the difference between stained and natural!
We use the same special antler stain to return
the Grade 3 antlers to a "natural brown" that we use on Grade 2
antlers. We also take special care to sand and seal the antlers to bring back a
beautiful surface texture. You will still notice some cracking.

If you are searching for antler art with a lower
price tag, our artificial antler designs are for you. Click here for more
information about our new
Cast
Antler Designs.
Made from high-strength resin, these antlers are
cast from real antlers. Artificial antlers are less expensive than
most natural antlers and they also weigh much less than natural antlers because
they are hollow. They are hand-colored and virtually indistinguishable from the
real thing.
If you are not an antler connoisseur, you won’t
be able to tell the difference between the natural and artificial antlers unless
you look very closely or unless you pick one up. People who really know
their antlers can also recognize that each antler is exactly the same size and
shape.
All About Antler
Chandeliers By Horns-A-Plenty
Chandeliers are our specialty. We now offer 40
standard designs and were always coming up with something
new as we design custom pieces by request. We take pride in our
work. Here are some important features we offer:
- More Antlers! — We use more antlers per chandelier than
most other antler art companies. The approximate number of antlers is
listed next to each piece.
- Center-Bore
Wiring! — We run all wiring through the center of
the antlers and junction boxes are concealed.
- Chandeliers & Sconces are UL
Approved!
— You can be sure your fixture is safe
because all directly wired fixtures by Horns~A~Plenty are
approved by Underwriters Laboratories to meet their
standards for electrical safety. That means we must not
only use lighting parts that are manufactured to UL
standards, but each finished piece must also conform to
their standard. Each piece must pass a di-electric test
in which we run 1,200 volts through the wiring to make
sure there are no short circuits and UL inspectors
randomly visit our workshop to inspect our methods and
records. We provide a packet that includes a canopy, mounting hardware,
our UL number, and our address and phone number.
- Custom
Options! — Standard pricing listed is for Grade 2
antlers with adjustable light sockets and antique brass
accessories. We also offer other grades and finishes upon
request, we can make LIGHT SOCKET COVERS for most
models, and we offer accessories (chain & light
sockets) in polished brass or black.
- Shades Available! — We can add western-style or rawhide
shades on the larger chandeliers (32 min.
diameter). All shades are sold separately.
- You Specify Chain Length! — If not
otherwise indicated, chandeliers come with 6 ft. of chain and 7 ft. of wire. Well ask
you for the exact lengths youll need when you place an
order.
- Up To 60 Watt Bulbs! — Most of our chandeliers feature
candelabra-style light sockets (small bases) for which
you can buy a variety of wattages up to a maximum of 60
watts. Large Edison-style light sockets are available on larger
chandeliers.
- Your Piece Will Be Unique! — Sizes listed are approximate because each
piece is handmade and because no two antlers are alike.
- New Chandelier
Hoists
Available! — Now you can safely and easily lower your chandelier
to clean it and replace bulbs. With a turn of a key, your chandelier
lowers in less than two minutes. These hoists are designed to install in the attic of
new or existing homes. These products are patented and UL-listed and are
available in four sizes for 200 lbs. to 1,200 lbs. They range from $650 to
$2,200 and you will thank yourself for buying one many times each year.
They even make the initial installation of your chandelier much easier! Please call
Pat at 1-800-467-6599 for more details!
At Horns~A~Plenty you can customize your
chandelier right down to the type of light socket covers. Our
standard is an adjustable light socket with a metal light socket
cover. The whole assembly is mounted on a swivel
base so you can adjust it yourself. The
standard light socket cover is antique brass and we also offer
polished brass or black. Click on illustration to enlarge.

We also offer antler light socket covers in
which a cast antler is placed over the light socket so it looks
like natural antler all the way up to the light bulb. Antler light socket covers are fixed to the
antler they are mounted on and blended in with fill material so
you can't see the junction. Therefore, they are not adjustable. Click on illustration to enlarge.

QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN YOU ARE SHOPPING
FOR ANTLER ART...
There are a number of antler art companies out
there, and it is often difficult to tell what to look for when you are shopping
for a piece. Because antler art is made by hand by individual craftsmen, they
all have different characteristics. Here are some questions you can ask to help
make the process easier and the answers from Horns-A-Plenty:
1) What grade of antler do you use?
A: We offer a choice of antlers. Grade 2 is
the standard. Grade 1 is 50% more and Grade 3 is 20% less. See
Antler
Quality & Pricing above.
2) Do you use any artificial coloring on the
antler or is it the natural color?
A: We normally use antler stain on the
Grade 2 antlers -- using it very carefully to make sure the antlers look just
like natural brown. If requested we can leave them natural
"sun-bleached" white. This also applies to Grade 3 antlers. Grade 1
antlers are left "natural brown" which varies depending on the
vegetation where the animals live. See Antler Quality
& Pricing above.
3) Do you use natural or artificial antlers?
A: We offer designs using either. At
present we only have one artificial antler chandelier -- the FX332. See
Artificial
Antlers above.
4) Are your chandeliers/lamps/sconces approved
by Underwriter's Laboratories (U.L.).
A: All of our direct-wired fixtures --
including chandeliers and wall sconces -- are U.L. approved. We can provide a
copy of our U.L. number prior to purchase if necessary. See
Chandelier
Information.
5) Does the wiring run through the center of
the antler or is it exposed on top of the antlers?
A: All of our wiring runs through the center
of the antler so you see nothing. See
Chandelier
Information.
6) How much fill material do you use to
conceal antler imperfections and/or wiring components?
A: We try to minimize the amount of fill
material used. An antler "burr" conceals the junction box from the
bottom and patches are only made where the center-bore drill bits come out at a
curve in the antler.
7) How do you join the antlers together? (Are
they sturdy?)
A: The antlers are pinned with threaded steel
dowels which are held in place with super-strength epoxy. We make sure each
antler is attached to another antler in at least three places. The
resulting web-like structure is incredibly strong. The antlers themselves are
like bones and are extremely hard and strong.
8) What types of light socket covers do you
offer? Are the lights adjustable?
A: We offer 2 choices, metal light socket
covers (in antique brass, polished brass, or black) which are attached on a
swivel (adjustable) base. Or you can have cast antler light socket covers which
are attached to the antler below and are not adjustable. See illustrations under
Chandelier
Information.
9) Do you charge extra for things like extra
chain and wire if I have a tall ceiling?
A: All of our chandeliers come with 6 feet of
chain and 7 feet of wire. After that, we charge $10/foot.
10) How do you ship the pieces and how much do
you charge for crating and shipping or freight?
A: Smaller items are shipped by UPS and larger
items are shipped by freight truck. The price for packaging and shipping for
each piece is listed next to the item price. If you order more than one item, we
can often combine them and offer a lower packing/shipping price. See
Ordering
& Shipping Information.
11) What is your
completion time?
A: Regular orders are completed on a
first-come-first-served basis. Our completion time varies and is usually 4-6
weeks. We also offer a rush service for an extra 25% which means your order is
placed at the head of the schedule. You will be given an estimated order
completion date when you place an order.
12) Do you offer an unconditional guarantee
for any malfunction? Will you take the piece back if I don't like it? Who pays
for the packing and shipping if I have to send it back?
A: Yes, we offer a 100%
satisfaction guarantee. If the item is defective, we pay for
packing/shipping back to us and either fix it, make you a new piece (and pay for
packing & shipping of the new piece back to you) or refund your money. If
you don't like the piece, you can send it back for a full refund or exchange,
but you would be responsible for the packing/shipping back to us. If the piece
is damaged in shipment, we call the freight company, have them return the piece
for repair or exchange, send it back to you at no charge, and we take care of
the claim with the freight company. See 100%
Satisfaction Guarantee.
